Bangkok, 15 September 2025 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) successfully hosted the “2025 Amazing Thailand Public Square Dance Competition” on 12 September at Aksra Theatre King Power to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China. The event highlighted cultural exchange to promote awareness of Thailand’s tourism among China’s public square dance community.
The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Yang Xiao Long, Counsellor (Cultural Section) of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Thailand, joined by Mr. Chuwit Sirivajjakul, TAT Executive Director for East Asia Region.
The competition drew over 300 participants from Kunming, with teams performing three-to-five-minute routines under the theme of the 50th anniversary of Thai–Chinese diplomatic ties. With no limit on team size, each group demonstrated creativity and energy, reflecting the cultural bonds between the two nations. Prizes included trophies and souvenirs for 1-3 runners-up. Additional recognition was given for best costume, while all participants received certificates of participation from TAT.
The judging panel comprised representatives from TAT and Representative from Private sector (Calypso) as committees, assessing performances on creativity, choreography, synchronicity, expression, stage presence, costume and styling, and overall enjoyment.
China’s population aged 50-60 and above reached around 290 million in 2024, with more than 120 million regularly engaged in public square dancing. Popular among women aged 50 to 70, the activity is recognised as a public sport under China’s 2023 national sports plan and serves as a cultural bridge that fosters friendship and mutual understanding, reflecting the spirit of Thai–Chinese relations.
